The HTML Title Attribute

Assigning a title attribute to each of the links in your navigation structure can make it easier for users to navigate your site on cell phones.

For example, the image to the right shows how the following code:

<area shape="rect" coords="645,124,707,153" href="rates.htm" title="Web Design Rates" alt="Web design rates" />

displays on the page when the user hovers the mouse over the link image rates.

This can be especially valuable when users are trying click on links when they are viewing your web page on a cell phone; the popup title assures user that they are in the right place for clicking on the link.

You can see this effect working when you click on any link on this page.

You can see this effect on each link on the home page of my website at Christopher Merrill Web Design. The same effect can be seen on the home page of Wikipedia.org.
